Arsenic and Old Lace Review
The popular stage play, “Arsenic and Old Lace” is a hilarious show perfect for people of all ages. Mortimer Brewster is a film critic and the youngest of three brothers and was raised by two dear, but rather eccentric spinster aunts. Circumstances develop that causes Mortimer to believe that insanity may run in his family. He begins to question his own sanity and debates whether to go through with marrying the woman he loves. It seems that his two dear aunts have a nasty little habit of ‘putting poor souls’ out of their misery with a little arsenic-laced elderberry wine. Now we watch Mortimer go from a nice, normal, film critic to a nervous, neurotic mess as he tries to figure a way out of the predicament his well-meaning aunts have now placed them. Let’s throw in one brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt and another who is a psychopathic killer fashioned after Boris Karloff. Then we have a Peter Lorre type, Dr. Einstein, who is a slightly intoxicated make-shift plastic surgeon. The hilarity runs rampant as we discover that Mortimer’s sweet maiden aunts have a number of corpses buried in their cellar. This is a truly classic, funny show that you don’t want to miss.
